More than 30 years ago, Ira Wallace created Travel with the Experts Ltd. to encourage museums, colleges and universities to share knowledge beyond their walls and go to the source. He focused on travel to rare destinations chosen by experts and unusual places rarely seen by the visitors who flock to the major cities and post-card icon sites. TWTE’s ‘insider tours’ included visiting Egypt’s pyramids with expert archaeologists and historians; going backstage after a show at theaters in Dublin and London hosted by drama professors and other opportunities for people to share their love of travel with subject-matter expertise.

In the 1970s, TWTE was among the first U.S. tour operators to showcase the natural beauty of Cancun and Cozumel, and the archaeological wonders of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. A decade later, the antiquities of Morocco, Malta, Sicily, Egypt and Turkey were among TWTE’s most popular destinations.
